Inhumane conditions

Inhumane conditions.  Most people think inmates deserve to be suffering.  Crimes should be punished.  I'm not arguing that crimes shouldn't be punished but must we do so inhumanely?  I thought the constitution protected people from cruel and unusual punishments.  Boy was I wrong!

I suppose most will argue prisons aren't inhumane.  Really?  So are you telling me that sitting in a brick oven with very little ventilation on days when the temperature reaches 100+ is humane?  The weather people are warning us to take caution and watch out for the heat.  Check the elderly, those with health problems, the young etc.  Seek a cooling shelter if you have no air conditioning.  Well, our men and women in prison can't do that and very few prisons have air conditioning.

Add to no air conditioning, they are only provided a cup of ice twice each day IF the heat index reaches a certain degree.  Yard and gym are cancelled because of the heat so they sit in their cells and literally bake.  DJ promises me he drinks as much water as he can and keeps a wet rag around his neck to try and stay cool but I know that isn't helping much and with his health and blood pressure problems, I'm scared and worried.

Sure, he has a small 6" fan but what good does that do when all it does is move HOT air.  I sit here and feel guilty for being able to sit in my air conditioned house and go to the fridge/freezer anytime I want.  He can't do that.  He can't do anything and I worry constantly.  What if he has a heat stroke?  They don't care.  What if his blood pressure rises?  They won't even know as they don't check it.  What if......Nope, they don't care!!!

No air conditioning is just one of many things that is inhumane about our prison system.  I could go on forever and ever but no one cares unless you have a loved one in there.  Well, for those of you who are in my shoes, I feel your pain.  For those of you suffering in prison, my heart goes out to you and please know I'm advocating for you.  You may not be able to use your voice but I have a big mouth and I'll gladly open it and speak out in support of you.  You are not alone and I do care!!!
